I just switched from cable to DSL. I have been using Thunderbird as my email client while on cable internet and loved it. Now I need to switch it over to DSL (att net) and can't for the life of me figure out how. I did the pop server and smtp server but when i try to send an email i get a pop up that wants the log in and password. When I type that in it says its incorrect. This is driving me batty. Im using xp pro. Any ideas? I guess I should also say that our service is in my wifes name. So I set her up an account and then set sub account for me. I tested the email and sent her an email she replied but it never came to my Thunderbird client. Instead the reply went to my att net sub account. I dont want to use web based email. I like using Thunderbird. It's not clear to me who your new DSL email account is with(AT&T?) but I'm betting that the providor has a setup page for their email and T-Bird. My suspicion is there's a port or config setting you need to adjust. Try calling their support line if you can't find a Thunberbird setup page. The following is a quote from the Mozillazine Tbird support page... AT&T appears to resell Yahoo mail providing access to Yahoo's POP and SMTP servers. They have thier own help pages though. Common problems appear to be not entering your email address as the username not checking the "Use name and password" option for the SMTP server or checking the secure connection or authentication checkbox. Here are the settings if your mail is att net or worldnet att net.... * Mail Server Type: POP3 * Incoming Mail (POP): ipostoffice worldnet att net * Outgoing Mail (SMTP): imailhost worldnet att net * Ensure that the option My server requires authentication is checked. * User name or POP name: Enter the full e-mail address in the User Name field. For example: or * Ensure that the option Always connect to this account using is selected and Local Area Network is chosen from the drop-down menu on the Connections tab. * Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 465 for SMTP. * Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 995 for POP3. My wife does have outlook express and I couldnt get these settings to work on hers. Open your email client program. Locate the email account settings for your particular client. Change the POP server to pop att yahoo com. Change the SMTP server to smtp att yahoo com. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995. Confirm the above settings before clicking OK. Just a dumb thought but if you switched from cable to DSL changing email addresses anyway (right?) why don't you get a Gmail account instead? It works fine with Thunderbird (POP or IMAP) and if you ever change isps again you won't have to switch again. I don't think you can do that but you can make more gmail accounts all you want (separate login for each though) and check them all in thunderbird. You can also set each account that you make to automatically forward a copy of incoming messages to any other account you have so you only need to check the one if you want. Here's something else to think about too if you set Thunderbird up for IMAP instead of POP it will sync all of your gmail folders. Let's say you check your mail with Thunderbird and you sort some messages move them to other folders delete others. If you log into gmail webmail someplace else (say you're on a trip or something) those changes will be the same there and if you make changes in the webmail those will also be reflected in Thunderbird the next time you use it if any of that makes sense. If you set it up for POP only it won't check your "spam" folder so if the filter incorrectly finds something you won't know about it unless you log into webmail. One more thing with gmail you have basically permanent backups of all your messages. Instructions to set up IMAP are here. IMAP seems to work well that's how I use it. Do you want to use the AT&T account for email? For one thing even if you don't use it (I use my own domain for email) you still have to configure your outgoing email to go through AT&T. See the following for settings depending on your provider our Email Address: Incoming (POP) Outgoing (SMTP) pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo comIncoming mail server: POP3Outgoing mail server: Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authenticationIncoming mail port #: 995 secure connection (SSL) checkedOutgoing mail port #: 465 secure connection (SSL) checkedThe above is most important! You must set your POP3 port to 995 and your smtp port to 465. Any account you have will have to send through port 465. I realize the above with the different baby Bell providers is run together. Bottom line is pop att yahoo com is for your POP account and smtp att yahoo com is what you send through.

Here's something else to think about too if you set Thunderbird up for IMAP instead of POP it ordain sync all of your gmail folders. Let's say you check your mail with Thunderbird and you sort some messages move them to other folders remove others. If you log into gmail webmail someplace else (say you're on a trip or something) those changes will be the same there and if you make changes in the webmail those will also be reflected in Thunderbird the next time you use it if any of that makes sense. If you set it up for POP only it won't check your "spam" folder so if the separate incorrectly finds something you won't know about it unless you log into webmail. One more thing with gmail you undergo basically permanent backups of all your messages. Instructions to set up IMAP are here. IMAP seems to work well that's how I use it. Do you want to use the AT&T account for email? For one thing even if you don't use it (I use my own domain for email) you comfort have to configure your outgoing email to go through AT&T. See the following for settings depending on your provider our Email Address: Incoming (POP) Outgoing (SMTP) pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo com pop att yahoo com smtp att yahoo comIncoming send server: POP3Outgoing mail server: Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authenticationIncoming send port #: 995 secure connection (SSL) checkedOutgoing mail port #: 465 secure connection (SSL) checkedThe above is most important! You must set your POP3 port to 995 and your smtp port to 465. Any account you have ordain have to displace through turn 465. I realize the above with the different baby Bell providers is run together. Bottom line is pop att yahoo com is for your POP account and smtp att yahoo com is what you displace through.
