"Lunarpages Spamming Wikipedia!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:43:56

Hi,Just like to give my opinion. I noticed that Lunarpages has a page in Wikipedia and it is more like an advertisement. Do you guys think it is right to "spam" Wikipedia about your own company? Lunarpages is a Web Hosting company which also sells domain name registration and other e-business and e-commerce website features. It was created in the late 1990s by Ron Riddle and Maximiliam Andersen (Andersen was previously with technology companies in Sweden). The name “Lunarpages” was inspired by Riddle’s interest in the popular sci-fi television show Star Trek[citation needed]. In fact some of their first hosting packages included the “Shuttle” and “Voyager” plans also Trek-inspired. Their trademarked logo is a small planet with two gold/yellow rings circling it. Lunarpages’ services literally began with a handful of servers housed in Riddle’s bedroom where Riddle and Andersen offered free web hosting subscriptions to customers worldwide. Currently. Lunarpages serves more than 140,000 worldwide customers and staffs 130 full-time employees. Andersen has since sold his shares of the company to Riddle who is the sole owner and CEO of Lunarpages Web Hosting. █ Unleash the real potential of your website with Aspiration Hosting! I wouldn't quite call it an advertisement. Its just there to give some info about the company (history etc). Other very large hosting companies also have their sites on wikipedia: █ Unleash the real potential of your website with Aspiration Hosting! Probably because they tried to put themselves in this category:They are not on par with google. AOL. Live. Yahoo etc Probably because they tried to put themselves in this category:They are not on par with google. AOL. Live. Yahoo etc █ Unleash the real potential of your website with Aspiration Hosting! The creator of this article or someone who has substantially contributed to it may have a conflict of interest regarding its subject matter. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page. This article has been tagged since October 2007. People are really looking for any reason they can to rage against the big players in hosting.

"How to avoid issue with ISP over spamming by members?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:21:30

Our site is an invitation-only career site for top-tier professionals and we back up members to arouse others they know on the principle that good people know other good people. Although we have all the proper language on our site and invitation templates to guard against spamming the contend we have is that a few members may send invitations to a large communicate enumerate sometimes to populate that they do not know well. As a prove we have occasional complaints about spamming and we are concerned that this may eventually bring about to our ISP terminating our account. Isn’t this a common air for any site that allows their members to displace emails to others? What is the best practice to hold back spamming by members? More importantly how to we forbid the issue with ISP terminating our account because of spamming by our members which may come about from measure to time? One option we are exploring is to use a crowd mailing function to displace invitations rather than doing that directly from our place. Any feedback on this come? I'm curious what other social networking place does. Any advice is much appreciated. Option 1:Member can have the option to receive email invites from:a. All membersb. Selected members probably from his/her contact groups basically he/she knows the personc. Never from blocked listd. Never from any one. The user can set this either at be creation measure or later on; and can change his preference at anytime. "Please Stop Spamming Me for Votes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:40:36

Let me walk you through my morning thus far. I go into the office log on to Trillian and start working. I acquire an IM from an SEO who makes some small communicate before getting to the point: he wants me to digg/reddit about four stories. I click on the links and (pay attention here) I keep working. I notice that I get several email notifications from Digg that "so and so has sent you a shout!" I click on them and see that I received several shouts from two users for the same story. And the shouts keep coming about thirty minutes apart (about as back up and pleasant as a pregnant woman's contractions. I bet). At this inform. I'm getting a bit irritated and alter the shout feature on my Digg compose. The SEO who initially IM'd me IMs me again and asks me to choose for the stories if I haven't already and now he asks me to comment on the stories see if any of my friends will choose for the circumscribe and instructs me to vote for other stories in between the votes for his stories so my activity doesn't be suspicious. authorise so apparently now I'm being treated like an employee and am given specific instructions on how to vote. The measure time I checked. I wasn't getting paid by these SEOs to vote and promote their stories. My choose counts as one not one + comments + 12 other votes from my friends. If you ask me to look at your story evaluate one vote if that nothing more. That SEO's employee then IMs me and asks me to vote on the claim same story the other SEO asked me to vote on (and it's the same story I kept getting shouts for). At this inform I tell both him and his employer that I've already received repeated requests to vote for this story and that it's getting downright spammy and inconsiderate. They defend and express me that they'll arrange with their team to avoid asking the same person for repeated votes. I'm left alone until... Another SEO IMs me and asks me to be at a video on YouTube. He initially asks me if the video loads properly. I say yes and change state the video tab because it looks lame and I don't want to watch it. After a couple minutes the SEO asks me to favorite the video and furnish it five stars. My claim response is. "No it's lame." He fires back with "Tuesdays and Thursdays are social days." [say from Jeff: "You experience what? Tuesdays and Thursdays are also days!"]authorise now I'm really getting angry. You experience what? I don't compassionate if Tuesdays and Thursdays are unofficially dubbed "social days" in the SEO/internet marketing industry--that doesn't mean you should displace me 32 IMs asking me to digg/reddit/propeller/sphinn/youtube rate/del icio us bookmark the same stinkin' story or that you should guilt me into voting because today's the day that people ask for votes so I should compete nice and vote up anything that gets sent my way. This is getting ridiculous. The SEO then says "don't make me beg." I respond by saying that I only choose for something if I evaluate it's interesting and that I'm not voting for the video because I evaluate it's lame. He then says "SMM etiquette you know? You do this for people who do SMM so they do it back for you." My response is less than professional: Me: WTF! SMM etiquette my ass! I get spammed with this [expletive] [expletive] all day. That's not etiquette. Begging for a vote isn't etiquette. Ask nicely ONCE like [name of SEO redacted] does. He takes the convey and stops bugging me. Tamar wrote a similar affix about and I couldn't agree more (note: I am also a Sphinn moderator so think about that before you e-mail me for Sphinns). At this inform it looks like I'm slowly being driven to a) dread Tuesdays and Thursdays b) block spammy SEOs from IMing me (which I don't necessarily be to do because some of these populate are my friends) or c) stop logging into my converse programs because I don't be to get spammed. Not all of my colleagues act this way. There are plenty who IM me with a link and say nothing more--they understand that I'll be at it and decide whether or not I want to award it with a choose and they're fine with that. Some SEOs displace me links to stories that I vote for every time and do you experience why? It's not because they're my BFFs it's because the cram they displace me is That's the whole inform of cerebrate bait and of viral marketing. populate overlap things and vote for things that they find interesting whether it's funny informative educational inspiring enraging etc. If I desire it. I'll choose it up. If I don't. I won't. I don't want to sound desire a jerk but if you're requesting votes from populate you need to understand that by awarding your circumscribe with a choose. If you keep bugging them and badgering them and incessantly hounding them to vote up your content they're not going to want to allocate you with a vote any more. I'd desire to close with some If you do displace someone a cerebrate displace it ONCE and then get that person alone. You've done your job of bringing his/her attention to your story now let him decide if it's worth a choose. If someone does not choose for your content don't hold it against him or try to guilt him into voting ("Come on we're friends!"). If change surface your friend doesn't evaluate the circumscribe is worth his time what chance does your piece have of being interesting to the mainstream? populate gratify just be considerate. Just because you're my friend that doesn't automatically mean you can act advantage of it and evaluate that I'm an automatic vote no questions asked. I don't compete that way and I deserve a little more consideration than that. I completely understand. It was like that in my college dorm i was the geeky computer nerd people who i barely knew and some i knew well would go down to "converse" and some how it would end up with them asking me to come fix their computer. :-P But desire you i had a few friends that didn't do that they might IM me asking where a setting was and that was it. Its frustrating when "friends" or the like just bomdard you for cram. Especially when you working. Heck if I ever alter on to your friends list I promised only to spam you with requests for a go out. :-D For an office adorn we once set one of our guys AIM profiles to all the computer back up settings advertising more remove support than you can move a stick at... Good times. He appreciated it slightly less though than the girl who had banana peels taped under her desk. Funny you should say that Zegron. When I first read Rebecca's post which clearly touched a nerve. I immediately thought of the old trick I used to use on telemarketers where I turned the delay on them and turned it into a game where I gave myself points for throwing them off bring in making them go away their compose over getting them angry with me for asking stupid questions etc. In your case. (being an admitted computer geek and all) asking your friends for an intro to at least three prospective female friends in transfer for computer help would probably undergo solved the problem. Back to telemarketing the very best "turning the tables" call is here: WOW - i cant imagine being so pushy - I dont even like to Sphinn my OWN articles because I be that to come about based on be not me pimping my own stuff (admittedly i dont really do that alter but i have a phobia of being too self-promoting in some cases) I was impressed with your restrained response i'd undergo added in at least 4 more [expletive deleted's] What's the name of the affiliate where Tuesday.

Five days is a desire time in the blogoshpere. I’m sure some of you are seeing this in your cater reader trying to bequeath what this site is about and why you subscribed. And with that comes the inevitable […] This story broke in August but it’s heating up again because MSN is still up to something. MSN has been referral spamming websites. This means they “ping” a place with a bot acting like a human and leaving a link in the referral logs approve to MSN’s website. Spammers do this hoping you will check your logs and follow the links approve to their site where you will make a purchase click an ad etc. MSN claims this is a “quality analyse” but what kind of QC wreaks havoc on your primary competitor’s ad schedule? javascript including the one used for Google Adsense. You may recall that the determines the quality (value per move) of ads placed on your sites. With MSN’s referral spamming they are racking up impressions but not clicks damaging your CTR and ultimately income. Michael has more on the alter caused to Adsense including. It seems to me Google should be kicking and screaming over this. But with thousands of gearhead doctorates engineers and techs I guess the idea of a bot from MSN This gets stranger as the hits from MSN look like legit search referrals complete with keywords in the referral links left in the logs. If you check the keywords sending traffic though you may be disappointed as you won’t actually be for them in the public search engines. You can hit the books more about checking your logs for at eKstreme. Pierre is also asking for any victims of this odd behavior to mouth out like Reuben who has reported on his own site and gives a good tutorial for reading referrer logs. Donna reports that MSN has acknowledged this odd behavior and requests that webmasters. It’s not happening on any of my sites but if it were I’d be inclined to tell MS to force off. They have plenty of resources to conduct any kinds of tests they desire - without messing with my stats or potential income. The real hurt about this is what Pierre pointed out: Microsoft could be “testing” on their own cached versions of websites but they aren’t. Instead they are creating low levels of confusion across the internet and messing with publisher’s Adsense stats. The only people that benefit from this is Microsoft. I sure hope it’s worth it.

"Spamming the web?" posted by ~Ray

The web now a days has more cast aside and spammy web sites than ever. If once when we needed to sight something on the net all what we had to do is write our keywords in the examine bar move the examine add and than find the results in the first page today we undergo instead of terminating our investigate in the first page of the SERPs we be to continue our investigate in the secondary pages of the SERPs. What makes our examine undergo harder?Thats the first question that came in my object when I first saw WikiPedia as #1 for keywords “web hosting service” (mentioned on ). Even tho I don’t accept that an online encyclopedia website ranks #1 for a keyword that includes While reading the bind I open out that two “entrepreneurs” had a wild idea on how to. The two “entrepreneurs” idea is to build 5000 (yup thats right. 5000) web sites and blogs that will create $1 a day (be of $5k a day). change surface tho the idea to make money is exciting and somehow hard to complete (say they undergo hired 300 person to create by mental act create and write on their communicate) it can be made but regardless the Because “entrepreneurs” desire them are those that caused and. "Social Network Quechup Accused of Spamming" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:18:14

Lately I've been getting invites to a new social communicate called. I'm already a member of too many social networks so to be honest I've ignored these requests. But it seems Quechup has been automatically sending out invites without the knowledge or react of the people signing up. I got this email today from someone I experience: I was recently tricked by a spam engine posing as a new social communicate. I got an arouse from someone I knew and trusted signed up to see what was about. Two days later. Quechup sent out SPAM to my entire communicate schedule. Please ignore or delete all emails claiming to be from me that mention a site called Quechup com. Please also accept my apologies for any affect this may have caused you. I won't mention the name of the person who sent this communicate because it isn't their fault. Clearly Quechup has broken the golden rule of social networks and abused the believe of their users. Quechup's tagline is "the social networking platform sweeping the globe" - however it seems to be doing that via an email spam campaign. Our recommendation: be away from Quechup. You may also adopt my own current rule and not sign up to new social networks unless there's a alter - and new unique - benefit to you. After all how many social networks do you be? Sounds desire this social network is a social experiment see how many populate ordain happily click through a disclaimer saying all their personal information will be available to anyone. Probably not a bad business opportunity at the same time. :) I think the most important piece of advice we should be passing on as far as Quechup is concerned is attach Quechup invites as spam. Don't just remove them don't just ignore them.. help alter sure every send system and spam filter stops these things before anyone change surface sees them. Thanks for this article. Even sending nastygrams to the morons at Quechup management did not help so I had to act my contact list to a new a/c and delete all saved contacts after I send msgs. What a arouse nuisance wish these guys get crucified. Maybe google yahoo and microsoft will listen to experts like you and others and disable's Quechup's find to their site/mail system/whatever it takes... I got too on my personal email gmail ID and change surface my official ID. I've marked their domain as spam in my send filters. You should experienced Indian SOcial Network sites there are many Indian sites that do this automatic invites again and again. Good idea about the e-mail notification. I received an arouse today and an hour later a similar apology letter from my friend. Maybe we should make sure we experience who's the head of this thing so when it folds we won't be fooled by their new scam. I known these guys (if it is still owned by the same two)and undergo worked for them. They are really decent and reputable people who would never ever intentionaly do the things you are saying. They have openly worked against such garbage this all sounds dodgy to me. Please. gratify let me speak to them and let them experience about this. We must give them the right to say. I'm sure they will be horrified as am I. I was a test pilot for this site. amazing how "snippets" of information can completely change the meaning of things. Lets be at a few of the comments here: 1. Eran Hammer-Lahav: believe to the privacy statement put the whole sentence in there before scaremongering - "We overlap much of our data including personally identifiable information about you with our parent and/or subsidiaries"NOT so scary in fact standard in privacy policies for Yahoo. Microsoft. Google - quick cancel all your web services get that operating system off of your computer. whatever! Oh yeah not to mention that all your Facebook details get shared with the developers of all those extra applications you lay on Facebook yes that's right most of them are not developed by Facebook and have nothing to do with that affiliate but they get access to all your Facebook details - now that's worrying given a Facebook app can be developed by some computer undergrad - whats he doing with your details and where's he storing them? 2. Ryan: "mark Quechup invites as spam" - there's a cerebrate at the bottom of the invites to stop getting any more send from Quechup pretty standard cram. I've got invites Quechup before since clicking on that no more. I've also got invites from Yahoo groups and done the same thing. Other sites that displace you "reminder" invites after 3 days. 1 week etc are much more annoying. quick update. For curiosities sake I just joined Quechup after getting an arouse. The back up go of the sign up affect is the communicate book analyse thing. First off its an optional step there's a "drop this bit" link on there. Anyway I went ahead and checked the communicate schedule using a throw away telecommunicate address with a handful of other equally throw away or fake addresses and the address of the person that invited me. It returned a page with a match for the 1 communicate of the person who invited me and.

"Spamming from malware authors" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 17:19:22

In the month of August we had observed a huge spamming outbreak from malware authors. Could this be an early warning signal for a new deadly virus/Trojan contend? It appears that malware authors are trying to alter their botnet base by injecting and infecting as many machines possible. Cyber criminals are increasingly making use of different methods to move their tentacles and one of the best ways is to globally distribute huge spam campaigns with either a malicious attachment or a URL cerebrate in the e-mail telecommunicate which actually downloads some components of the malware label. This is usually in the create of either a rootkit or a Trojan. The spam email containing the link for the malware download lures the recipient to willingly download software for testing so that they may receive a remove license. Many users can easily get trapped by such emails (the lure is getting something for free and when it’s a remove license for software many users will speak thinking they have found a great negociate.) Another observed example of this technique utilizes the greeting card (eCard) spam emails which often provide a link to download the video portion of the greeting card. The beat move of such links provided in these emails are that they start downloading the malicious files as soon you change state the URL on your web browser without any pop-up acceptance (e g.: Do you desire to continue transfer or the location for download). From: [REMOVED]To: [REMOVED]affect: (awesome new video| dude check out this video is not out yet| your gonna like this| OMG analyse out the new video lol)Date: When I first looked at these unsolicited emails. I had one question in my mind: why is the spammer giving the IP address rather than the DNS label? Is it to make the link be more attest or are there any other reasons? Simple logic says when an antispam company blocks IP’s such as these the chances of effectively blocking future instances of the e-mail communicate or protecting users from website reputation decreases. This is because in many cases they are the actual IP of an infected end user machine which is dynamically assigned by their ISP. The spammers ordain rotate through these IP addresses contained in their network of compromised end user machines and the IP’s will additionally be rotated through the ISP’s pool of end users providing a second layer of obfuscation. Website reputation systems that are reliant only upon block lists of URL’s/IP addresses ordain have a limited level of effectiveness for zero-day outbreaks of these incidents due to this multi-layered obfuscation. The furnish line is for end users to avoid any kind of downloads unless you are sure of what you be to download and if sent by someone you know confirm that they actually sent you the URL or register.

"Yahoo Answers, The New Spamming Ground" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:24:47

There is a go that is taking note that questions and answers have a tendency to rank well in explore and other search engines. Yahoo Answers has been ranking come up in the search results for a while now. So the concept of using this communicate as a platform to try to back up your traffic is nothing new (although the call implies that). (1) Hey it looks like Yahoo Answers ranks come up said one member.(2) "Interesting. Do people comfort use Yahoo Answers to drive traffic to their relevant website(s)?" Said another member.(3) "So go in and start answering some Yahoo Questions you wouldnt believe the traffic i get with it!" said another member. You see how it begins or ends for that matter. The e-mail controls at Yahoo Answers are nice so let's see how bad it gets at Yahoo Answers in terms of spam. My be was closed at Yahoo for spamming. Thing is people were asking the same challenge over and over so all I did was just cut and paste my say. Not spamming just answering a question that someone wasn't cause to be perceived enough to research first. For the next month I kept getting "beat Answer" emails from Yahoo and 6 months later some still go in. I think that any company that has a holistic come to Internet Marketing and is including SMM should add Yahoo Answers to the mix. My advice is to judiciously answer questions based on whether or not you feel the person is looking for a true solution which would likely solicit a click through to a resource URL (ideally yours) otherwise you can invest lots of time with little ROI on your time. BeachBum - Perhaps the best course of action is to point them to the previous post where the question was answered? I think that could comfort solicit a "beat answer" without reposting your content.
