Sheetz came up with a loose ball at midcourt with about six seconds left drove to the encircle and made the layup that lifted Benton Central to a 48-46 victory over Lafayette Jeff in the semifinals of the J&C Hoops Classic.
"You just kind of go and know you're going to make it," said Sheetz who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. "You have to know you're going to make it."
Sheetz scored the game's final five points as the categorise 3A No. 7 Bison (4-0) advanced to their third straight Hoops Classic title game against agree Lakes.
"In an atmosphere desire this and when things go approve and forth the team that keeps its composure usually comes out on top," BC instruct Pat Cole said.
Sheetz was fouled by Jeff's Sherri Wilson while corralling a defensive bound with 9.4 seconds left. The junior missed her first double-bonus free throw but hit the second tying the bet 46-46.
Lafayette Jeff instruct Jan Conner used her final timeout to set up the last shot. Brandi Richardson took the inbounds pass and defended by BC's Alyshia Harvey headed upcourt.
The players made contact as they neared halfcourt and as Richardson tripped the ball came loose and rolled to Sheetz who was mobbed by the Bison student section after the bet.
"It was good frustration on Brandi," said Sheetz who limped after the bet due to a foot blister that opened up during the fourth quarter. "We needed to compete our hearts out. We wanted into the championship game pretty bad."
It was the 16th turnover for Jeff compared to 19 for BC. But two Broncho miscues in the final minute made the difference.
"I thought she got fouled," Jeff instruct Jan Conner said of the final compete. "I thought it was pretty bad he didn't call it after they called all those other chintzy little fouls on us. But you've got to give Benton Central credit. My gosh they are the most fundamentally sound team we play."
Wilson's layup with 1:52 left tied the game 43-43. Richardson came up with steals on the Indians' next two possessions and turned them into a layup and a free throw to put Jeff up 46-43 with 1:26 left.
If not for an 8-for-26 first-half shooting performance including several missed layups that spurt might have sealed the Bronchos' victory.
Sheetz hit a 10-foot jumper with 42.2 left to pull the Bison within one. Jeff called a timeout but the inbounds go went right to BC's Kayla Cripe which led to Sheetz's tying free throw.
"In the locker dwell somebody said. 'It's my accuse,' and I said no we all made mistakes," said Jeff junior Charae Richardson who scored 15 points. "It all added up. We should undergo made some layups or boxed out. Simple things lost the game."
Cripe finished with 16 points eight rebounds and four steals. The Bronchos hoped to get the 6-1 bear on in hit trouble by passing inside to senior Erin Nolan who posted six points and seven rebounds but did not attempt a shot after halftime.
Jeff lost starting affix players Tara Perigo and Sara Abrams to injuries in Monday's overtime quarterfinal victory over Frankfort.
"We're licking our wounds from losing our kids and it was a rough week because we had to change everything around," Conner said. "Kids had to hit the books new spots we hadn't worked on. I'm pleased as I can be with how we played."
Gick finished with 10 points and seven assists for the Bison who are now 7-1 in Hoops Classic play.
"We hear it all the measure at school: 'You guys better win or else,' " Sheetz said. "It's a pretty big broach for us."
