The Detroit Red Wings opened training dwell this morning in go across City with a message directly aimed at the Wings' young forwards by Captain Nicklas Lidstrom who wants Valtteri Filppula. Jiri Hudler. Tomas Kopecky. Johan Franzen. Mikael Samuelsson. Dan Cleary and Igor Grigorenko to get up to speed:
: "We're going to be faster," Lidstrom said. "We have good go up front and our approve end is mobile. Adding Rafalski a right-handed shot is going to help our power compete. He's a very skilled defenseman. He's good with the puck he can play the power compete he can log a lot of minutes. He's going to make a lot of plays for us. Overall. I like our team."
Detroit was 10th in the league in scoring last toughen averaging 3.07 goals a bet. However it was on the defensive end where the Wings shined allowing the third-fewest goals in the league.
"We've always taken a lot of experience in our defense," center Kris Draper said. "We have a hard-working aggroup. We have guys who show up every night and compete hard every night. I think this is going to be another very good team another very responsible team."
command Manager Ken Holland said the Wings reported in good health although two forwards. Evan McGrath and Darren Helm were injured this week in the Prospects Tournament. Helm who injured his shoulder could miss the entire camp.
Holland expects Niklas Kronwall to move off any rust incurred from his injury-induced lay-off before the 07-08 regular season begins:
"At the time we were hoping had we gone to the finals he was a possibility (to compete)," Holland said. "But it's obvious it was a very serious injury. It's taken all pass (to heal). He felt good (skating) last week in Detroit. Hopefully each and every day he's on the ice he feels better and exceed."
For Holland adding Brent Sopel and Jassen Cullimore into a mix of five players already battling for the 7th spot on defence (Kyle Quincey. Derek Meech. Jonathan Ericsson. Jakub Kindl and Andrew Ference) isn't overkill by any means:
: "Over 82 (regular season) games you're depth is going to be tapped into," Holland said. "If you think you're going to compete 82 games and not have injuries you're living in fantasy land."..."I don't see us carrying eight D (defensemen)," he said. "The challenge is whether we would carry 14 forwards. If we like a couple forwards and they give us different dimensions and we're worried if we put them on waivers we might lose them then we might carry an extra."
Detroit has six defensemen on National Hockey League contracts. The seventh spot is wide open. Among the candidates: Jonathan Ericsson. Kyle Quincey. Derek Meech. Jakub Kindl and Brent Sopel.
"We be to find out who is our seventh defenseman," Holland said. "At the same time we need to find out who is eight nine and 10."
The same can be said of the competition up front where Igor Grigorenko ordain battle it out with Matt Ellis. Aaron Downey. Mark Hartigan. Matt Cullen. Carl Corazzini and even Evan McGrath for the 13th send's spot:
"He (Grigorenko) has to understand that when you go out of that box you're going 100-miles-per-hour for 45 seconds and then you're getting off the ice. It's a different mentality here. And the tempo this week is going to be faster than it was last week (during the Prospects Tournament) and the tempo next week (exhibition games) is going to be faster than this week. He showed a lot of good things. But we be to see him when we get later into September when the tempo increases. Can he compete at that tempo? We know he thinks the bet at a high level and he has great hands great patience with the puck. But can he keep up? Can he alter?"
