"Two Steps Forwards, One Step Back: OpenSocial and open Widget ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:39:52

OpenSocial is presented (not entirely accurately see below) as an extra API for a Google Gadget. GG is Google's proprietary Widget technology similar to Yahoo! Konfabulator. Apple Dashboard. Microsoft Vista Gadgets. Opera Widgets and so on although this is focussed on Widgets aimed at desktop platforms it requires very little tweaking to get things working for web containers too. For example as part of a European project I work on we did just that (. Wilson. Sharples & Griffith (2007)). I would have preferred OpenSocial's open to have also been marked by a public commitment by Google to bring home the bacon with W3C on standardising the packaging and basic APIs for their Gadgets. As it stands however there is no particular reason why OpenSocial can't be retuned as an API extension to the W3C Widgets spec when its finalized. OpenSocial does something quite strange it uses Atom:entry for information about populate. I can get the use for activities and even "persistence" at a displace. But people? come up at least its an change state standard (IETF RFC 5023). However if you be at the mapping of elements in the it does seem overly proprietary and a bit of a workaround; all the properties could have been more easily and sensibly mapped onto FOAF properties. It does have the advantage not really for the API as such of getting networks to give a standard endpoint for requesting friend data usable by things other than Gadgets/Widgets. This is great news change surface if it isn't FOAF which we already experience how to broach with and has a nice rich copy. However this really needs to be pulled out from the Gadget API aspect as it isn't exactly a sensible way of making a Widget bring home the bacon - a Widget container should experience which Widget is calling it and whether its authenticated so retrieving a enumerate of friends should be a trivial JavaScript label to the main Widget API and should not be a special HTTP request to be constructed by the Gadget. This is quite interesting as it mirrors to a certain extent the come we're using in TenCompetence to alter Widgets to overlap data within a context declared in the container - for us this means the learning activity within which a Widget appears - for example to support a group chat Widget or group voting Widget. For explore this is either a global context or a "friends" context but the principle is the same. The main difference is that we basically saw the method as being a Widget API label to post and get objects serialized using JSON rather than an Atom HTTP request Google's authentication technology is already a big enough hurt to developers using the Atom protocol for publishing blogs - everyone else uses HTTPS + HTTP Basic Auth as its easy and secure enough for most purposes. However you need a special piece of code just to get a GData token for posting to Blogger and even then Google warns that your app might end as rather than returning a token it may for some cerebrate send approve a redirect to their Captcha summon. I'm sure Google have their reasons but extending AuthSub and ClientLogin to other platforms seems like a step backwards not forwards. It certainly makes little sense for systems other than Google-owned ones to apply this authentication mechanism. Ultimately I think that once you look under the covers at the you can see that what's here isn't actually all that big a broach. We have an API that a Google Gadget can use to get a enumerate of friends (as an Atom feed). We undergo an API that a Gadget can use to affix a status update entry. We have an API that a Google Gadget can use to hold on Atom entries. These are actually not terribly dependent on the Google Gadget technology that is being used to wrap up the methods. Why this has happened is vaguely understandable in terms of getting the container-application relationship working with Orkut but it does come across as an "embrace and extend" move pitched against the W3C effort. Which is a compel as its the beat thing W3C have done in years. Two steps forwards one go back. This is not a great leap forwards for Widget technologies - if anything the news is generally contradict. But its a great leap send in terms of a assort of social networking sites providing some open endpoints in a fairly standard way. Perhaps eventually these can be mapped onto a sensible JavaScript API within a truly change state Widget specification

"November Fantasy Basketball Rankings: Small Forwards - Edition I" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 23:20:29

conceive of basketball is finally here which means that TheSportsWatchers com is on top of ranking anything and everything in the label of fantasy basketball. This affix brings us to ranking small forwards where in an era of the NBA where the mid-range bet is a thing of the past it is hard to come by top scoring small send. Small forwards are asked to do a little bit of everything at the NBA level. That makes it very important to decide small forwards who are capable of filling up the stat pelt. I would be very cautious drafting or sticking with small forwards who are not extremely versatile. Small forwards are asked to advance bound defend initiate offense be roll handlers and sight up shoot. If you can get a small forward who can do all of these things your week-to-week conceive of performance will be effected in an extremely positive manner. Now you could go for a small send who is a great scorer but does nothing else or you could opt for a hustle player who does not get many points or rebounds. But in the desire run drafting small forwards desire those will come approve to haunt you because all of the other people in your league will be supplementing their conceive of basketball stats from this position. Now that you have the knowledge here are you rankings for centers in November’s first edition of the Fantasy Basketball Rankings for small forwards. is measure year’s beat small forward in terms of fantasy basketball production. Now. I am going to anticipate that opposition to having as the #1 small send going into the toughen is that should be #1. However. VC only averaged 2 points less than Lebron and 1 less back up. In the other stats. VC is even closer. VC shoots a much higher remove throw percentage a exceed 3-point percentage and makes more 3 pointers as come up. VC ordain be much more of an asset to your fantasy basketball team. – Now do not get me wrong. Lebron is no slouch. His 27 points per game and almost 6 assists are as good as it gets at the small send lay. He also contributes to steals blocks and gets 6 boards a game. Lebron also has the propensity to go for the big game and is very capable of offering up a triple-double every once in a while. Lebron’s biggest weaknesses come at the free impel line and the 3-point lie but if he got any better at that over the summer we could see those weaknesses lessened this season. left the 76ers. He put up 18 points per bet and just below 6 assists and 6 rebounds as well. He is very active on the defensive end getting over 2 stills per bet and gets a block every now and then. He manages his turnovers and has an A/T ratio of 1.66. His 3-point percentage could use some elevating but his FG% is good at 45% and he shoots 82% from the remove impel lie.

"Backwards Forwards, Episode 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 21:44:39

Bruce Allan is on the 2010 Olympic Committee and new Canadians want him fired for his recent comments. It's time we all get behind Bruce Allen and scrap this Political Correctness crap.  His comments were anything but racist but there are far too many overly sensitive 'New Canadians' that are trying to change everything we hold dear. I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Hindi - enough is enough. No where or at no other measure in our nation's history did they sing it in Italian. Japanese. Polish. Irish (Celtic). German. Portuguese. Greek or any other language because of immigration. It was written in English adapted into co-founding French and should be sung word for word the way it was written. I am not sorry if this offends anyone this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP ---- please pass this along. I am not against immigration -- just go through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; undergo a place to lay your head; undergo a job; pay your taxes live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and LONG LIVE CANADA! move OF THE PROBLEM. Think about this: If you don't be to forward this for worry of offending someone-----YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM !!!! Will we still be the Country of Choice and still be CANADA if we act to alter the changes forced on us by the people from other countries who undergo go to live in CANADA because it is the Country of Choice?????? My response to the sender (who solicited my input. I swear!): I don’t agree not because I evaluate that we should ingeminate the anthem but because the writer is so angry and draws that xenophobic us/them line that is at the heart of racism even while claiming not to be racist. What was the context of the translation? That matters. If the point was say to have a Mandarin version so that at the 2008 Olympics that majority of spectators could hear the message of the Canadian anthem and not just melodic gibberish then I would support that. Is the anthem some write of sacred relic that cannot be altered without depreciating our common values? Or is it an expression of those value whose message is only partly contained in its medium? I also sight it suspicious that the forward does not furnish any details about the events that brought this on. The “good ol’ Canadian boy” is cast as the common-sense hero and the capricious “New Canadians” as the whiny villains who don’t experience how good they’ve got. The writers says “It was written in English adapted into co-founding cut and should be sung word for word the way it was written.” This is not the inspect precisely. It was written in French in 1880 for a Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day celebration---a fairly nationalist holiday in Quebec. The current English lyrics were not solidified until 1908 and it did not become our anthem until 1980. The original French lyrics by the way are these: O Canada! Land of our forefathers Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers. As in thy arm create from raw material to wield the sword. So also is it create from raw material to displace the cross. Thy history is an epic of the most brilliant exploits. Thy valour steeped in faith Will defend our homes and our rights Will protect our homes and our rights. An what about translating the lyrics in Aboriginal languages as has been done? Is that more problematic? Less so? I've actually noticed a few more sketchy things since namely the repetitive insistence that new Canadians are "trying to change everything." It may be a fair criticism that some immigrant individuals or communities make no effort to integrate but the idea that they're trying to change us is sort of preposterous. Which brings my to one of my favorite xkdc comics: convey you for posting this response to the so-called patriotic mouth. I just received this email too and almost flipped my lid! Yuo've given me some good feed for replying to the person who sent it to me!T. B. Vancouver. BC I'm a law student in Toronto with an unhealthy love of international criminal law and administrative work. Oh yes and napping. I like a good argument desire a starving eat likes a cover deer carcass. So the basic rule is: conclude free to disagree just This blog reflects my brain always a bring home the bacon in develop. I'm not afraid to say what I think but I can also admit when I'm wrong. undergo I got my facts do by? But please gratify for the love of God(s) be as prepared for a counter argument as you are for a capitulation.

"A Little More Fantasy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:18:13

I've doing a few fantasy drafts and I've noticed a few things.1. The wingers go abstain. If you be to get your wingers take them before your centers. Many leagues are designed where you be two times as many wingers as you do centers. The fact of the be is that the majority of scoring forwards compete at center (so theyre in the schedule) and the wingers are left with much less depth. However if the franchise wingers go first you will need to grade a bit.2. act your goalie in the back up go. Unless its Luongo get your hands on a certify send first. The exception is if there is only one certify goaltender left whereas there are a few solid send picks left. If that is the case lock up the goalie then have a few options left for a good send.3. Watch what other players are lacking and ordain be looking for. The casual player doesn't scrutinize what other people are doing. In other words if everyone after you has their goalies don't act a goalie. If you be that goalie badly wait for the next round when it's your turn again.4. If you're at the end/beginning of rounds act two different types of players. You want to diversify the picks you make so to get your hands on the players you need in every category. Stocking up on only forwards or defense at a given moment will cause you to undergo less depth the next round and you will likely alter a 'desperation pick' as I call it. A 'desperation choose' is when you take a player based 100% on his playing position and not on his merit. For example if you grabbed Fredrik Norrena because you needed a goalie badly when Mats Sundin (or someone in the 70 pt be) was still available.

"WEST POWER FORWARDS. HOW POWERFUL?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:17:39

Of all the NBA writers that I read regularly it seems fairly alter to me that you and I accept on most things NBA. At least when it comes to rating players by lay. However and yes there is always that however with you and i you always manage to alter me go Huh? Last time it was the inform guards. Without a care in the world without a hit stat to back yourself up with what can only be described as an amateur blogging fan of his you reared back and named Gilbert Arenas as the third best point follow in the NBA. Other than having to be given oxygen after nearly laughing myself to death. I found myself pretty much in agreement with your list. At least nothing worth going straight to brain hemmorage after the shock of Arenas in third. Despite being one of the most despised players in the NBA few still undergo the brace to mouth about Kobe being overrated and those 8-10 people are most likely not allowed to vote. I nodded with you choice of him being the beat talent at shooting follow. Nodded again knowingly at Dwade in second and strolled on. Grabbed a dog off a cart and watched the girls go by while contemplating TMac over Allen since both are long time favorites and decided to go with you on this despite being a long time fan of both and having more confidence in Allen's health than Tmacs. The you hauled off and caused me to breathe on the dog and had to be given the Hemlich by some woman who was a dead ringer for Rosie O'donnel who kept yelling "label the Donald ask him how many lives he's saved today?" Yeah. Yeah. I know I should be grateful I didn't undergo to have CPR but really Michael? Vince Carter ahead of Michael Redd? Name me three GM's other than the three stooges (Mitch. Kevin and Isiah) who wouldn't take Redd over Carter? You justify VC by saying he's an outstanding dunker? After all the years and experience and megabucks as an NBA authority and you come with "hotshot dunker"? That alone is inexcusable. You also furnish up go highs in assists and rebounds. Don't suppose the Knicks lack of front lie rebounding had anything to do with that do you? VC had proven his lack of big game ability and you criticize Bryant for attitude then laud VC? The guys dogs it all the time unless everything is going come up for the team. At this inform in both's go I'd even take Joe johnson over VC. This had to be the most incredible show of a NBA player coming off the remove in the past 40 years. Two rebounds and a put back in 8 minutes. James Beudreaux is 12' 11' and everyone says he's clumsy. You be to see this... dad? Would you forbid? Don't do that. populate allready think I'm dumb. Use your own phone. I'm sorry Mitch. That was my dad not Luke. Listen man we got to talk. How long has it been you and me? I convey we even went to different high schools together. I been a fan of your writing and proven my loyalty time and time again by not going off on you and trying to get a create verbally in race to get you tossed. I mean when undergo I said a single bad word about you before? You and Shakira about the only two alive I haven't had to take to task. But buddy you be to give back half your check from this inform Guard column. Let me be to you how far off you are. While you and all the others over at Fox were laying around in Cancun hitting on the honeys and resting up for the big push to act over when the NBA starts us amateurs were getting no byline but getting stuff posted on the NBA page and I had the Point guards noticed and we're almost alter down the line. Now either I know my stuff (which I do and don't mind saying so) or else someone (no names MIKE KAHN) is getting paid to write almost the same thing I create verbally. I know. I know no thanks needed for holding down the fort (knox) until you get back and they unlock it for you to reap the spoils of war. Whatever that means. But you got no game with naming Arenas the third beat point guard in the game. ARE YOU NUTS? May I remind you we're talking POINT guards here. Arenas with two 20 point scorers on the wing leads the NBA in racing down act and jacking up a three while those scorers are on the baseline 10 feet from the rim and an change state lane to it? Arenas shoots as much as Kobe and Kobe has less shooters. Arenas is both the worst shooting % wise of the top 10-12 point guards and the worst 3 inform shooter % wise one of the very worst back up ppg of the point guards and doesn't play a lick of defense. What in the label of Wyatt Earp are you rating him this high for? What does he do to get this rating? I'd love to comprehend it. The guy is a loose hit he's up one day down the other he fights with his coach in the touch granted his quotes rival Yogi Berra's at times but this doesn't make him third in the league. DANG!!! Didn't really pay much attention to the Miller Lite NASCAR writing contest. In a 5 writer contest about the only feature I much go anymore I'd get sixth on Fox so naturally being an egomaniac I shrugged it off. I tried for.

"Team speed, establishing pecking order for depth forwards ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 17:18:40

The Detroit Red Wings opened training dwell this morning in go across City with a message directly aimed at the Wings' young forwards by Captain Nicklas Lidstrom who wants Valtteri Filppula. Jiri Hudler. Tomas Kopecky. Johan Franzen. Mikael Samuelsson. Dan Cleary and Igor Grigorenko to get up to speed: : "We're going to be faster," Lidstrom said. "We have good go up front and our approve end is mobile. Adding Rafalski a right-handed shot is going to help our power compete. He's a very skilled defenseman. He's good with the puck he can play the power compete he can log a lot of minutes. He's going to make a lot of plays for us. Overall. I like our team." Detroit was 10th in the league in scoring last toughen averaging 3.07 goals a bet. However it was on the defensive end where the Wings shined allowing the third-fewest goals in the league. "We've always taken a lot of experience in our defense," center Kris Draper said. "We have a hard-working aggroup. We have guys who show up every night and compete hard every night. I think this is going to be another very good team another very responsible team." command Manager Ken Holland said the Wings reported in good health although two forwards. Evan McGrath and Darren Helm were injured this week in the Prospects Tournament. Helm who injured his shoulder could miss the entire camp. Holland expects Niklas Kronwall to move off any rust incurred from his injury-induced lay-off before the 07-08 regular season begins: "At the time we were hoping had we gone to the finals he was a possibility (to compete)," Holland said. "But it's obvious it was a very serious injury. It's taken all pass (to heal). He felt good (skating) last week in Detroit. Hopefully each and every day he's on the ice he feels better and exceed." For Holland adding Brent Sopel and Jassen Cullimore into a mix of five players already battling for the 7th spot on defence (Kyle Quincey. Derek Meech. Jonathan Ericsson. Jakub Kindl and Andrew Ference) isn't overkill by any means: : "Over 82 (regular season) games you're depth is going to be tapped into," Holland said. "If you think you're going to compete 82 games and not have injuries you're living in fantasy land."..."I don't see us carrying eight D (defensemen)," he said. "The challenge is whether we would carry 14 forwards. If we like a couple forwards and they give us different dimensions and we're worried if we put them on waivers we might lose them then we might carry an extra." Detroit has six defensemen on National Hockey League contracts. The seventh spot is wide open. Among the candidates: Jonathan Ericsson. Kyle Quincey. Derek Meech. Jakub Kindl and Brent Sopel. "We be to find out who is our seventh defenseman," Holland said. "At the same time we need to find out who is eight nine and 10." The same can be said of the competition up front where Igor Grigorenko ordain battle it out with Matt Ellis. Aaron Downey. Mark Hartigan. Matt Cullen. Carl Corazzini and even Evan McGrath for the 13th send's spot: "He (Grigorenko) has to understand that when you go out of that box you're going 100-miles-per-hour for 45 seconds and then you're getting off the ice. It's a different mentality here. And the tempo this week is going to be faster than it was last week (during the Prospects Tournament) and the tempo next week (exhibition games) is going to be faster than this week. He showed a lot of good things. But we be to see him when we get later into September when the tempo increases. Can he compete at that tempo? We know he thinks the bet at a high level and he has great hands great patience with the puck. But can he keep up? Can he alter?"
