Past blogs have explored social networking sites. How do we keep our children safe from all the crazies out there? It is not only sexual predators that are the problem but also cyber-bullies who terrorize the weak and vulnerable. It was announced by Attorney General Drew Edmondson that technology has been developed to verify the age and identity of MySpace Users. This is a joint project of the company and 48 state attorney generals. The place will be safer for children. Under the agreement profiles of MySpace users ordain be set to private so no strangers can get information from their profile. Users can block anyone over 18 from contacting them. People over 18 cannot add anyone under 16 as a friend in their communicate unless they have their last label or an e-mail address. This is a go away but there is actually no age-verification system. Additionally predators be good at getting around restrictions. Age verification requires a data-base which would be vulnerable to hackers and anyone who could get into the system. Here comes the same old song. Once again the real responsibility falls into parent's laps. An open door policy regarding tween and teen activity on the Internet should be the norm. If your child wants privacy suggest a diary. Their password access should be a given and regular monitoring of Internet activity practiced. (Of course you may have to bite your lip about other things you see there. This is another one of those "pick'" your battles issues.)MySpace offers the following guidelines for children and parents:# Don't drop that your MySpace profile and forums are public spaces: Don't post anything you wouldn't want the world to know-such as a phone number address ect. Avoid posting anything that would alter it easy for a stranger to find you such as where you hang out every day or a picture of you in lie of your school or work displace.# populate aren't always who they say they are: Be careful adding strangers to your friends list. It's fun to cerebrate with MySpace friends around the world but avoid meeting populate whom you do not know.# Harassment hate speech and inappropriate content should be reported: If you conclude someone's behavior is inappropriate report it to MySpace or to the authorities.# Don't post anything that would discomfit you later: it is easy to think that only friends are looking at your MySpace page but the truth is everyone can see it. Think before posting a photo or information you wouldn't want your parents potential employers colleges or bosses to see.# Don't say you are over 18 if you are not: If MySpace service determines you are under 14 and pretend to be older. MySpace ordain remove your profile. If customer service determines you are over 18 and pretend to be younger. MySpace ordain also remove your register. Source: MySpace estimates 20 percent of teens have met someone online that they have never met in person. "The Death of E-Mail?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:23:34

I came to a rather shocking discovery a few weeks ago: by using e-mail to communicate with my students. I’ve placed myself in an almost pre-historic category. I’ve always been proud of the fact that I’ve kept walk with the telecommunications age.  I can’t bequeath ever being intimidated by a conjoin of technology with the possible exception of the first pocket calculator I saw in high school. For you youngsters out there pockets were considerably larger back then and so were calculators. You may experience that I undergo the at (with modifications) and I’m part of a small fraternity of Harding faculty members who were assigned email accounts before somebody discovered the necessity of first and lay initials. As a result. I’ve always been elrod@harding[dot]edu — others in unify consider my friends Mike James. Fred Jewell. Scott Ragsdale and Jeff Hopper.  The guys in IT tried to get me to switch to the “melrod” a few years ago but I declined.  For ME. It’s desire having the status of one of those license plates with a low number and not actually having to pay for one. But if you are my age and you are an exclusive e-mail user populate under age 25 probably evaluate of you as a bit of a cybersaurus.   In a recent bind at Slate com. (2005) that found that young people are turning away from telecommunicate at an amazing evaluate: I confirmed all of this when I ran it past Alan (via a Facebook communicate. I think) and then confirmed it again when I mentioned Lorenz’s article to the students in my three IR classes yesterday. They seemed to agreed that. For the measure several years. I have asked my students to provide me with an e-mail address in addition to the old-fashion stuff teachers ask for on the first day of class desire dorm telecommunicate numbers. I’ve been asking for HU Box numbers for twenty years but I can’t remember the last time I actually used on to get in touch with a student. Yesterday. I asked for all that old stuff again but added something new — I encourage my students to join a I created exclusively for my four classes this semester. I’ll still use e-mail as a required method of getting in touch with my classes but the Facebook group will provide an alternative to communicating with students who hardly ever analyse their telecommunicate. Several students told me that they only check email once a week but be at Facebook several times a day. In addition to the occasion reminders about assignments and exams. I’m going to post links to relevant articles and a “term of the day” for both my IR and comparative politics classes. I’m already thinking of it as a mini-blog for my classes. I’m trying to see a down-side to this — my students aren’t required to connect the Facebook assort so there may be a few that will continue to depend on the e-mail. I think that the idea that “email is for old people” is right but not because it’s an obsolete technology that’s on it’s way out. Email is less useful for chatting than IM or sites desire facebook. Social networking is the main thing that teens do on the internet and telecommunicate is not the most efficient method for that. It is however (and I think it will be) the best method for conducting business and more formal communications. Hence the overall rise in email use.

correspondents who are Iraqi. There's a pretty amazing affix entitled "" that needs to be read in full. From it:We (I mean Iraq) changed our governments six times in less than four years starting from the two US governors Jay Garner and Paul Bremer then the governing council when we had a new president each month ( 11 presidents in 9 months) then Allawi government then Jafari government and now we have Al Maliki government. We have one of the biggest cabinets in the world. No we undergo 36 ministries. I even cant ascertain them but I know that we even have ministers who do nothing but traveling from one country to another and getting paid. We have the largest be of US troops. We have more than 160 thousands all over Iraq. Im afraid that the continuous immigration of Iraqis will create a problem to these troops because Im afraid that one day will go and the US troops would find the Iraqi houses empty. The will have that strange feeling of loneliness and they would ask their commanders "Can you tell me what are we doing here Sir?"We seem to have the longest make noise walls in the world. Some blast walls were built to defend other blast walls like the ones around the green zone which defend the houses of the officials in the green zone whose houses are surrounded by other blast walls. I'm sure if we take all the concrete blocs of the blast walls from all over Iraq and put them on the Iraqi borders we would have enough cover blocs to build a giant blast wall that circles Iraq. In fact we would help the neighbor countries and they would never think of building any walls like Saudi Arab does now. They would send a thank you letter. I'm afraid that one day I would have to pass through a blast wall to go from my bedroom to the kitchen. As this weekend. Monday night. (If you're a Diana Krall or fan of 'The Rock,' they are also schedule to be.)"Martha notes on the new plan out of the Pentagon where "U. S military snipers in Iraq aim suspected insurgents by scattering pieces of 'bait,' such as detonation cords plastic explosives and ammunition and then. [kill] Iraqis who pick up the items according to military court documents." The "newness" factor can be debated since a technique long used in Iraq has been the US military leaving items out and then shooting Iraqis for touching US government property. From the article:"Baiting is putting an object out there that we know they will use with the intention of destroying the enemy," Capt. Matthew P. Didier the leader.

"How Blogging Brings Dialogue to Corporate Communications" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:27:20

As promised to the participants of this (Monday) evening’s event here is my slideshow of the talk notes and links. note: notes written up on the instruct on the way home. I hope the links aren’t too broken and that it makes comprehend; let me know in the comments if there is anything weird. say: the beginning of the notes are roughly what I said; questions and answers are not included — there were lots; I gave an accelerated version of the second move of the presentation as we had talked a lot and actually covered much of what was important anyway. For links related to corporate blogging see those tagged and for those linked to today’s communicate. move on the “related tags” on the right to investigate advance. I’ve added glide numbers in brackets roughly when they be. Not that the slides are that interesting of course… [4] As you’ve probably noticed. I’m not a Powerpoint wizard so won’t be dazzling you with fancy slides and lots of buzzwords. I’d like to undergo something approaching a conversation with you. I’m obviously expected to do quite a lot of the talking (that’s what I was asked to come for!) — but you know lots of things I don’t and you’ll have comments and questions. gratify ask them as we go along… I’d rather go off-track from my presentation and be sure to address the things you’re wondering about. note: and yeah that’s exactly what happened! got so caught up in our conversation that I lost bring in of measure! This way of doing things you’ll sight is related to what blogging is about. [5] First. I be to know a bit more about you. I know you’re communication executives and I’m told you’re already familiar with blogs — that’s a start but I need more: [7] often fails because it’s just publishing “official communications” in a different wrapping. And official communications are boring — I wish I’m not breaking the news to anyone. Example of this: . Not very exciting. I think a lot of corporate blogging failures can be attributed to stopping at the “drive” aspect of blogging and underestimating the cultural aspects. I’ve just finished my second posting and I’ve realized how much there is to hit the books about the blogosphere. I’ve spent a lot of time looking at other blogs listening to what others are saying about what we’re doing and picking up some suggestions along the way. () From a business point of view adopting blogging is a strategic decision because it impacts the culture. It’s not just a shiny drive we can use to do the cram we do usually it’s linked to deeper changes. [9] So we’re going to concentrate on the “grow strategy” side of blogging which is the first part of this presentation. So we’re going to have to backpedal zoom out and look at the big picture: [10] The Internet. The Cluetrain Manifesto. So what’s about? It started as an online mouth and grew into a book in 2000. It’s still valid today. Basically the Cluetrain says that inside and outside your organization and they can’t be stopped. [11] People are tired of being talked at. They (inside: employees; outside: customers) are too work having [12] real conversations with their friends populate they know and trust. Offline as come up as online. They won’t comprehend to fabricated address (a lot of marketing). I know that when I acquire my tip statements. I’m interested in how much I’ve spent and the flyer giving details about my bank’s latest service goes straight to the bin. What about you? [13] These conversations are everywhere. They’re talking about you — you the companies. A lot of our day-to-day conversation is about brands consumer products services… These conversations [14] can’t be controlled. hold back is a big issue when it comes to corporate blogging. Is communication something you control? Are conversations something you can control? [15] We experience how important word-of-mouth is in marketing and in the shaping of buying decisions we make. We comprehend to our friends (populate we trust) way more than advertising. Do great stuff. compassionate. Let people know. They’ll communicate about you. [16] Blogging is about jumping in there being part of the conversation. And this conversation is bigger than just blogging. Not that easy but : bequeath what it is to be human. To be passionate about something. To care. Bring that into the conversation. So the important challenge becomes: how ordain this fit into my corporate grow — or not? Is it compatible? [17] What by corporate blogging: blogging that has to do with corporations businesses. Blogging beyond the drive (culture). Everything is possible. Corporations do not communicate. Humans do populate. You can’t remove the person from the communicate. Businesses with a “do the alter thing” attitude. Enthusiasm needed! [20] Bad guys shouldn’t blog. Businesses who mistreat customers and employees shouldn’t either. Not if you’re alter or cheesy or very controlling. (See Naked Conversations pp. 134-138.) enable blogging. Encourage employees to blog. Blogging is a grassroots phenomenon but it needs support create the top. There are maybe people already blogging — find them and use them to encourage more blogging. [25] undergo a purpose (that important Why? question). Don’t blog to blog. evaluate out what current needs can be adressed by blogging. You can start small: This is very context-dependant. Need to understand the context well to be able to decide/advise wisely. Careful! If you’re using a communicate to affix the usual “official communications” you’re missing something. [26] learn the culture: this is the big bit. Listen to bloggers (online and offline in-house and out). Get training (this is where it’s worthwhile to put your money as you’ve saved on expensive software). Before going to. I studied the grow but it couldn’t prepare me totally for what I open when I went to live there. You be to go to a foreign grow to really “get” it. Blogging is a foreign grow. Learning to blog come up can act time. Not everyone is a natural. Ongoing effort! [27][28] bequeath blogging is about Me & You having a conversation. [30] Passion. Believe. Be passionate. If you’re not interested it’ll be boring. [31] Style. HUGE subject. How to write on a blog. It’s difficult. [36] ROI of blogging (google for “ROI blogging” — without quotes). Comes up often (need for quantitative measurement) but still very debated topic. Respected experts all over the map from to. [38] construe the first sentence… what is do by here? Not a human speaking. Don’t post press releases as communicate posts. You might have in mind them or cerebrate to them or mention on them but don’t fasten them in there as posts. How does the reader think his “feedback” ordain be received when he’s being spoken at to start with? [39] Privacy concerns raised on other blogs. Good to address the issue and respond instead of hiding! (it would just get worse… cf. Kryptonite). “move here” looks bad though and hints that the medium (blogging) isn’t really understood. [40] OMG. What is this doing here? Did somebody smoke something?.

"SezWho comment plug-in for portable reputation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:39:03

Two weeks ago I attended the latest event of the Boston. It was come up worth the time. 3 "main cater" presentations. 6 "side dish" demo tables and plenty of measure to communicate with roughly 400 interesting people. If you're in the Boston area look for me at the next "WebInno" event on Nov. 6. One of the people I met suggested that I analyse out SezWho. BigSwerve's crawler aggregates comments to sight the underlying social network that is created as a result of this implicit behavior and provides a believe into the conversation. Users can follow the comments for a given person and sight new content by seeing where other people are engaged. The main difference is that SezWho drives the traffic related to comments to the place where as CoComment provides the service for commenters by consolidating all the comments in one place…As such SezWho sells to Site owners where as coComments sells to commenters by mostly providing the service via a browser drive bar… Scott. Thanks for a nice writeup. We are always looking for great feedback. We are working on a design of our site and will provide a lot more information... BTW good tip about the call tags for each page need to be different. Also when you say - I find the current format busy and distracting - Are you talking about or the integration in the blogs... Send me a mail or reply here about any input you be to provide about how we can make it exceed? Also we are comfort working with 6A to get SezWho available on TypePad... This is perhaps the cerebrate we are not on Chugh's blog. Again thank. Jitendra Jitendra: sorry for the late say; I was on vacation. It's the formatting of comments that I think is way too work e g. (looking at construe/WriteWeb) the commenters name is at the beginning AND the end the # appears on its own line the "Was this comment useful" quickly becomes tiring and appears to be unconnected to the 5 box rating (one at the top one at the bottom). An additional note: I'm also skeptical of translating Yes/No into 1-5 using an invisible algorithm.. but that's a much longer discussion. In any inspect thanks for stopping by and good luck. The formatting issues at RWW are all related to specific UI related to RWW and can be easily changed if the bloggers be. In terms of translating the yes/no to a comment advance we use a scaling based on the reputation of the person. This enables users to undergo a simple interface to rate comments and us to put all these ratings with the allot charge to conclude a mention advance... Thanks. Jitendra
