"Future of Business Mobility in Australia: What Lies Ahead?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 02:27:01

With mobile penetration exceeding 100% of Australias population the mobile phone is now undeniably part of the fabric of our lives. In business mobile data has become the latest frontier for companies seeking greater responsiveness in the face of rising competition and customer expectations. For many organisations geographical expansion and the continual search for a better work/life fit for their employees also mean increasing numbers of workers are spending more measure outside the office and relying more on wireless technology to stay connected. The first major milestone in Australian business mobility came when Telstra unveiled the berry wireless email solution in 2003. Since then the other three mobile carriers along with a host of other wireless email solutions have flooded the merchandise with choice and greater affordability. More than three years after its first debut wireless email has now become the most popular business application being mobilised by Australian organisations. As the mobile carriers continue to roll out higher-speed networks and mobile applications become more commonplace the market is experiencing another significant milestone where Australian companies are beginning to mobilise business process centric applications in a major way. Notable applications include customer relationship management (CRM) for sales and marketing personnel workforce automation and list management for workers in the field and industry-specific applications such as mobile transactions location services and assets tracking. Challenges The rapid growth in mobile business applications does not come without challenges however. The additional data traffic mobile workers generate and their growing needs for a exceed user experience are putting considerable strains on the corporate network. As a result companies with a growing mobile workforce are encountering the formidable task of ensuring their corporate infrastructure and business support systems can accommodate the change. Network Readiness. More mobile workers accessing company data convey increases in traffic on the corporate network. Access to bandwidth-hungry business applications as well as real-time and multi-modal communications such as express and makes network scalability and quality of service a critical consideration. Remote Access and Security. As with wired remote access users mobile workers using a wireless connection increase the risk of the corporate network being exposed to unauthorised users. Increasing numbers of viruses and malicious codes are also making their way to the mobile world. Wireless Standards. Despite its rapid developments the wireless industry remains a highly fragmented market in terms of standards with many incompatible and proprietary technologies each offering its own unique advantages. The large number of mobile device choices and operating systems available on the market today only serves to exacerbate the situation. Mobile Device Management. Mobile devices used in an organisation either centrally or individually purchased tap into the affiliate's communicate and databases and must therefore be properly monitored and managed. Unmanaged mobile devices can bring serious security risks (viruses and hacking) to the organisation as can the misplacement and theft of those devices. Back-end Integration. Given the variety of back-end systems in an enterprise it is crucial that mobile solutions integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure. Companies also have to ensure their applications are create from raw material to cater the needs of mobile workers and the specific requirements of the mobile devices they use without substantial modifications to the databases or applications being mobilised. Cost Control. Implementing mobile solutions invariably involves for both upfront and ongoing costs. Obtaining accurate estimates of be cost of ownership can be difficult. In addition businesses will need to take into consideration the be of wireless connectivity which can be significant particularly when there are no centralised subscription plans. ROI Justification. Justification of the benefits especially intangible or soft benefits like improved workforce productivity and business efficiency can be difficult to quantify and can vary greatly among the various types of mobile users. At times companies may undergo to confirm the lack of a demonstrable ROI instead. Training and give. The resources to give the mobile solution being put in place are as important as the solution itself. User training must take into account the existing knowledge and offer ongoing formal and informal training programs. The IT department's buy-in on technical give and user training forms a key move of a successful mobility strategy. Many Australian businesses are merging their express and data communications onto one platform. That move made possible by Internet protocol (IP) technology is also allowing them to alter traditionally disparate telecom and IT networks simplifying the procurement and administration of technologies and greatly reducing costs. With IP as the common enabler of the technology roadmaps of businesses and carriers alike convergence is also blurring the demarcation between private and public networks. Since IP is at the heart of wireless communicate and mobile device developments it is natural for businesses to supplement their IP infrastructure and integrate mobility as part of their convergence strategy. In other words. IP is also melding wireless and wireline technologies thus playing an instrumental role in helping organisations achieve advanced stages of mobility deployment. Given mobility technology ordain become an inextricable element of the corporate IT infrastructure future challenges ordain likely change state even more complex. Therefore it is critical that decision makers adequately communicate the early challenges raised here or they will miss the opportunity to realise the beat benefits of mobility and risk falling behind competition.

"Seeking Mac friendly CRM solution" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 20:47:47

You have several options that fit into two categories. 1. Find a product that works in the Mac environment or (if you are using Intel based Apple hardware) 2. Use one of the many CRM solutions made for the Windows environment and run it in Parallels or kick Camp. Look to versiontracker to find products presently available. Netbooks is a web based CRM solution although moderately expensive is feature rich. be to MacWorld this coming January as there seems to be a stronger emphasis on business applications this year (for the iPhone and standard computer hardware/OS). Expect to see some pleasant CRM surprises from well known Mac software companies. Why not try a web based CRM program? As a designer. I'm not great with taking the time to get stuff set up and that's one of the reasons I desire online software if I don't like it. I move on. I used ACT for a while and tried to make spreadsheet cram work but went to SalesForce and it was so much better. But it was expensive. There's a bunch of good cram out there. Right now I've been using Entellium it's open source based and has some great features and it's cheap. I have a Mac and a PC and it allows me to use it on both as come up has have other the biz dev staff login as they need as come up. I'd bag loaded software as much as possible unless it's design software. Something that's used by everybody who sells anything. I'd go with an online solution. You might also act a look at dulcify but I've not found a good hosting solution for that. We're a Mac-based consultancy with 22 populate and we spent 3 months looking for a solution. We plumped for Daylite from MarketCircle but it is very comprehensice (ie complex). Good web-based system but probably a little too simple is Highrise from 37 Signals. The rest - especially the web stuff - were either too horrible for Mac users to even contemplate (sensitive GUI souls) or glorified communicate books. We have tried CentralDesktop and are now using WebEx Office. We have customer service manufacturing and sales all able to work virtual and keep all CRM records up to date. Great for a Global intranet with extranet features that supports both PC and MAC. The server side made more sense for us as we have sales manufacturing and customer function in 4 time zones. Very easy to manage security settings and permissions. I'm preparing to switch to a Mac based office and had used ACT on my PC for 14 years. Their newest version crashed my existing work which also sent me looking for new.

"Exchange Migration to Zimbra?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 14:23:11

We have used Zimbra for our development business as well as for our free POP3 service (the Architel aggroup comfort uses Exchange). After using Zimbra I could never go approve to Outlook/transfer. Recently a couple of our clients wanted to move from transfer to Zimbra.  If you construe the documentation made available by Zimbra it would appear migrating from transfer to Zimbra would be a conjoin of cake. Turns out it isn’t. The technical glitches we encountered were made change surface more cumbersome by the mis-information Zimbra provides to customers. Zimbra suggests. “seamless compatibility with other clients like ” ~ seamless? Really? I don’t evaluate so. For example it isn’t obvious that Zimbra won’t support shared folders (i e there are alternative ways to access folders but it requires users hit the books a new system) from Zimbra’s documentation. About mid-way through your first migration it becomes clear that shared folders are no longer an option (fairly big seam IMHO). Zimbra’s website also indicates that their software support Outlook 2003 and 2007 (beta) but if you try to use Zimbra with Outlook 2007 you quickly realize it doesn’t bring home the bacon. I called the Zimbra support team and they indicated that. “ ” To this go out the website comfort claims. “supports outlook 2003 / 2007 (beta). Why don’t they modify their website? I won’t reach going into the real (and expected) migration bugs but I did want to inform out that organizations considering migrating from transfer to Zimbra should spend most of their time reconsidering. Zimbra is a fantastic email solution for business. It is a great and (in my opinion) far superior email solution to Outlook/transfer. But. I would never suggest a company act to use Outlook with Zimbra. Why? Why would you? Outlook IS the problem for users and Zimbra IS the solution. The IT department will convey you for switching but only if you really change by reversal to the Zimbra web client or the Zimbra desktop client. Once an organization has decided to change the way they use email and switch to Zimbra they must realize that they need to back up their users deal with the change. They must instruct their users on tags examine and categories. They must prepare users that there ordain be incompatibilities that may never get translated. If you want to use Outlook my advice is to use transfer (period). […] Yahoo just announced they are buying my favorite email company. Zimbra for $350MM. Looks like the Benchmark guys are getting 10x on their money! This is great news for everyone involved. We are very excited about the prospect of an change surface more powerful email system (Yahoo don’t copulate it up). Mike reported the news earlier today in a affix titled. "Breaking: Yahoo Acquires Zimbra for $350 million in Cash." Architel and Big in Japan undergo used Zimbra for more than a year with great success. I wrote about the platform a couple of weeks ago here. […] If you undergo give issue please register a book instead of a mention. Comments are not logged as trouble tickets. convey you for your back up.
