"Screw-up at House Judiciary Committee sends whistleblower e-mail ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 05:34:36

The Washington Post on October 31 that “the House Judiciary Committee after promising strict confidentiality inadvertently sent the e-mail addresses of Justice Department whistle-blowers out to all those who have used a special tip line.” Vice President Cheney’s office got all 150 of the e-mail addresses. The Committee’s failure to design an effective system for dealing with confidential information strikes at the heart of one of the key reasons people hesitate to become whistleblowers—that they won’t be protected. In what has to be one of the more bizarre screw-ups of the Internet era the House Judiciary Committee after promising strict confidentiality inadvertently sent the e-mail addresses of Justice Department whistle-blowers out to all those who have used a special tip line. The error first reported by TPMmuckraker was compounded when the committee sent out a second e-mail to about 150 people who’ve used the tip line trying to recall the first. Apparently only the e-mail addresses were revealed—and doubtless many of them don’t reveal identities and others the Web site reported appeared to be fake. But one address was. That would be Cheney’s public address so his office got all of the whistle-blowers’ e-mail addresses. Gotta give you a warm and toasty feeling. In a statement a committee spokesman blamed a “technological error” and said it was trying to see if those exposed really were whistle-blowers or just random whiners using the hotline. The House Judiciary Committee has violated what I consider to be Rule #1: You DO NOT compromise the confidentiality of inside sources who choose to remain confidential. Good intentions are not enough. The Committee’s credibility in dealing with whistleblowers is shot and will be difficult at best to re-establish. Under the current circumstances. I would not recommend that anyone trust the Committee with sensitive inside information. The Judiciary Committee staff’s failure to protect confidentiality strikes at the heart of one of the key reasons people hesitate to become whistleblowers—that they won’t be protected. The staff may have jeopardized the positions of some of those they outed even though inadvertently. And this could well have a chilling effect on potential government whistleblowers who might be deterred from coming forward in the future. Climate Science Watch calls on Committee Chairman Conyers to establish accountability and take corrective action to prevent a recurrence. We also call on the Chairman to move legislation to provide immediate access to district court for whistleblowers if they are retaliated against as a result of Congressional breaches of confidentiality. The Committee issued a of explanation on October 29. The statement while attempting to be reassuring reveals what seem to me to be several flaws in how the Committee’s system for communication with inside sources was designed and handled. First asking people to trust the confidentiality of e-mail communication to a political entity like a legislative committee is questionable. Electronic communication has so much potential for glitches human error (as apparently happened in this case) hacking forwarding and spreading of information into wider loops of readership and so forth that generally alternative modes of communication are preferable. I would be more inclined to use one-to-one phone conversations and face-to-face meetings as much as possible—and securely-delivered hardcopy documents at least until a relationship of trust in additional communication methods is established between specific individuals. Second the whistleblower should have a say in whom to blow the whistle to. Asking whistleblowers to trust a system in which Members and staff of both parties would have access from the outset to communications that are likely to contain in some cases sensitive and even potentially incriminating information about the actions of public officials including administration appointees is questionable—especially in a political context so short on trust that it apparently took four months to negotiate an arrangement for sharing access to the communications (during which time the communications to the Committee have been allowed to just sit there with no one taking action on them as though nothing was time-sensitive). Even in the absence of a major staff screw-up like sending the e-mail addresses of all your sources to the Vice President the system designed by the Committee deserves skepticism about whether it could be trusted to protect sources. Other points: Whistleblowers and their information should be handled case by case by skillful professional staff. Communicate with sources one by one not as a collectivity. Don’t “task to clerical staff” the handling of highly sensitive information. If a legislative office wants to deal with whistleblowers and inside sources they should develop professional tradecraft along the lines of a whistleblower organization. They could learn something from the Government Accountability Project about how to do this.

"Comcast Cable Sued Over Bandwidth "Throttling"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 22:37:59

Jon Hart a Californian who has filed a conform to against Comcast is claiming that not only is the affiliate violating its own "Crazy abstain Speeds" advertising but is. When it was speculated that Comcast was to limit and even block its subscribers' use of bandwidth-hungry applications the affiliate responded that the accusations were. It then admitted to taking steps that were "temporary and intended to alter surfing for other users." Hart's accusations originate in from claims that Comcast is actively blocking peer-to-peer network merchandise. Peer-to-peer traffic is most often used by file sharing applications desire Kazaa or BitTorent for sharing music or videos. Comcast is allegedly sending re-create signals to these applications that alter them stop transmission of data effectively shutting them drink. It could be argued that such re-create signals are not altogether different from a hacker taking control of your computer. Beyond that the suit mentions that nothing in Comcast's user agreement bars file sharing and that their advertising claiming "unfettered access" to all of the Internet is misleading. For its part. Comcast has denied blocking peer-to-peer applications yet also says: We undergo a responsibility to provide all of our customers with a good Internet experience and we use the latest technologies to manage our network so that they can act to apply these applications. We'll be watching this story very closely going forward. From Related Links: says: Recent funny stuff by Comcast: measure Wednesday (Nov. 7) during the evening CNN news. Comcast briefly put up the "Required Weekly Test" screen (used to be Civil Defense now Homeland Security). This is usually on for several minutes around 2 or 3 a m and has a piercing high-pitched sound with it. This measure it showed up briefly just as Barney stamp was about to inform a account he was introducing to do something to protect gays. I never found out what it was but I wondered whether somebody at Comcast might be censoring the news. The same thing happened Friday evening - just 2 days later. I was watching a movie so I don't know what was on some other channel that may have annoyed whoever has his/her touch on the hold back adorn add. (When the Required Weekly Test comes on it's on all channels.)So. I called Comcast a few days later. The person I finally got referred to seemed to understand what I was saying but I could be wrong. I promised her that if this happens again and I undergo any suspicions at all. I will charge to the FCC. "Comcast blocking e-mail (from One?)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 23:14:19

Comcast is bouncing my e-mails to comcast net addresses. I submitted a ticket last week and was told by Daniel that they've contacted Comcast but it's comfort happening. Rather than re-activate my ticket I thought I'd post here since I'm sure I'm not the only one having this problem. Unless of course. I'm the only one left on One (a note-so-veiled plea for my Golden Ticket). Yup it's happening to me and one of my client's sites who I host. I'm on One. It was cleared last week but it may be happening again. Submit a ticket and they ordain displace a request to Comcast to have the block removed. I guess until they express us not to anymore. This seems to be a reoccurring issue.

To say Hi. Had my Q for 3 days and love it. First smartphone. Added the extended batt. 2 gig card ect. Did a custom domiciliate screen (I do computers) and added sprite backup a lesson hard learned. So far so good no problems. Jesse I'm having somewhat of a different issue with my Q and Comcast. I've had my Motorola Q since November (06) and I noticed last Thursday I can no longer find the envelope icon to move on and open my Comcast email from the Lite homepage that I've always used. It's simply not there and the page loads very slowly. Does anyone experience if Comcast upgraded the lite home summon or something and I just need to get a new version of this? Verizon has been no help and Comcast is sending me replies that cerebrate to a PC not my telecommunicate. Ugh! I'm getting nowhere! & ) If somebody helps you. Click the icon under their post.
